Description
This auction is for a scarce VIntage 1940s Diamond Roller Chain Advertising Sample Display Sign made to display in Buda Engine Sales & service locations. There are a number of locations listed at the bottom including multiple states across the West and Midwest. This is definitely a scarce sign. I searched high and low on the Internet trying to find something similar, but could not. This is the prize of my collection and it gets a lot of attention, but I am ready to part with it.
I want to be upfront and say that this is a large heavy sign at 31” wide x 26 1/2” tall x 2” thick. It’s almost 30 pounds. I included a picture to show the thickness of it, and it seems to be pretty solid. You can see from the back that the wires used to attach the chain samples do not come all the way through to the back, so there are multiple layers of wood.
You can see that there are some missing pieces and chains, and you can see some of the wires poking through from the back. There are also paint drippings, and missing paint. I have not tried to clean this up at all, so you can see the dirt and dust all over it. It looks like one of the legs might have been replaced at some point, but I am not certain.
The Buda engine company was bought by Alice Chalmers in 1953, so I believe the sign is from the 1940s. It is not dated, but has to be pre-1953. The Buddha engine company was founded before 1900, but this has to be after that.
The little Diamond Roller Chains plaque is in good shape and held in with four screws.
