    Description

TULLYS Store Advertising Plate 1900's Xenia Illinois McNicols Liverpool OH  Ship
This is an antique ceramic plate that advertises "Tully's" (General Merchandise Store) in Xenia Illinois circa late 1800's or early 1900's. The plate measures 7 1/4" diameter. The plate reads, " Tully's Dealers General Merchandise  Xenia, Ills". The maker's mark on the back reads, " D.E. McNichols East Liverpool, O". There are no cracks but plate has everyday wear as would be expected of an item of this age. Plates like this were poplar form of advertising for many business in at this time. This design features a ship in sepia tone color. There is an artist signature in corner but I can't make out the name. The name of ship is "Flusser".
The town of Xenia is in south west corner of Clay County. The store owner was leading citizen, Joseph E. Tully. He was born in Marion County, Illinois 1849.  His family moved to Clay County in 1855. He led a big life.... He was a Civil War Veteran serving with distinction for 16 months. He enlisted in Illinois Volunteers at about 14 years of age. At the conclusion of the War he went into the grocery business in Xenia and later branched out extensively in the mercantile line for 40 plus years. In 1870 he married Fanny Paine (born in New Bedford, Mass.). The couple had 3 children and the 2 sons went into family business with their father. Tully also ran an up to date dairy, was a farmer, a postmaster (12 years), Masonic member, member of GAR, President of Orchard City Bank, member of Baptist Church and a Republican.
McNichols Pottery Company was founded by John McNichol in 1869. He died in 1882 and his son Daniel took over.(D.E McNichol).  The pottery company was a big operation and had many kilns at two locations in East Liverpool, Ohio. Later the company added another location in Clarksburg W.VA 1914 . Those items would be then marked with Clarksburg W.VA location. So I assume this helps date this plate to the East Liverpool years under son Daniel's rein of operation and East Liverpool location (1882-1914).
