1. It helps get you in the ballpark with your water perimeters. The nitrate test is a little finicky as most users will agree. No fault of the kit, just the nature of the solution in bottle #2. You really need to shake it extremely well each time or risk fouling up the entire bottle. The rest of the test in the kit are much easier to use. Just read the instructions for each test and be sure to hold the vials against the white background when comparing them to color chart. The color of solution will look a bit more pale when moving the vial away from the card. This is not the right way to use this test, as it took me awhile to realize this. It also helps to be in a well lit room, preferably with "cool" lighting when checking the samples.
2. I wouldn’t call this a master kit but a great start. I want to give it 4 stars but can’t because it’s missing the GH and KH test which in my own opinion should be included in a master test kit. Another reason I chose three stars is because the test tube caps don’t sit tight against the glass and leak. Maybe I’m shaking too hard i don’t know but I’m not a moron, I can shake a test tube without being an animal. Just be careful, after all these are chemicals. I started wearing gloves when I use the kit. Besides these few flaws I have to say it’s a great starter kit. Don’t let the three stars stop you from buying the kit or testing your waters, it’s still a great kit just not 5 star worthy.
3. I bought this kit because it's cheaper than test strips in the long run. It works great. It's fairly easy to use and is accurate as long as you follow the instructions properly. It does take a lot more time than the strips (I think it took me about 15 minutes to do all the tests). My only real problem with this kit is that the little kids for the test tubes do not all form a tight seal and leak when you shake them. 3 out of 4 of my tops leaked. This is a concern because the drops for the ammonia test and the nitrate test both have warnings to not get it on your skin. I always wear gloves when handling chemicals, but not every one bothers. API should really fix this problem.
